Description:
Michael Moore's superb documentary (following in the footsteps of Roger & Me and The Big One) tackles a meaty subject: gun control. Moore skillfully lays out arguments surrounding the issue and short-circuits them all, leaving one impossible question: why do Americans kill each other more often than people in any other democratic nation? Moore focuses his quest around the shootings at Columbine High School and the shooting of one 6-year-old by another near his own hometown of Flint, Michigan. By approaching the headquarters of K-Mart (where the Columbine shooters bought their ammo) and going to Charlton Heston's own home, Moore demands accountability from the forces that support unrestricted gun sales in the U.S. His arguments are conducted with the humor and empathy that have made Moore more than just a gadfly; he's become a genuine voice of reason in a world driven by fear and greed. --Bret Fetzer

4  Excellent Film: Know the Truth
While you should always be careful of who might be trying to propagandize whom, this movie hits the mark. It is well researched and presented in a calm and factual manner. It is not boring as far as documentaries go, on the contrary, it is fascinating. I think that this movie is a must-see for every American. Let's stop reveling in our ignorancy as a country, whether you agree or disagree with gun laws.
4  A Weak Argument for a Powerful and Valid Point
While Moore's point should be a massive wakeup call for the American people about the true nature of indivdual liberty and (far from overwhelming) burdens of social responsibility, his point is often poorly argued and his evidence at times unnecessarily tenuous.
The idea that American history and society is less violent that those of Germany or Britain is just plain wrong - the acts Moore highlights were carried out by the governments, not the citizens of those countries. Both are guilty of massive international crimes in their past, but this provides no evidence whatsoever about the nature of violence in their societies.
The less said about the segment on the 'bomb factory' in Columbine the better, and Moore's editing is crafty and dubious. The work is thoroughly unscholarly, and speaking as a political theorist, would not pass any test of theoretical or argumentative rigour.

However, the liberal left in America need a voice like Moore's if any genuine notion of equality can ever surpass the egalitarian lipservice that is paid to democracy.
Speaking as a Brit, the notion of such a fervent pro-firearms lobby, simply because the constitution permits it, is bordering on the ludicrous.
Moore's point is simple and is supported by the one piece of genuinely hard (although unsourced) evidence in the film - American society is obsessed with guns and, quite simply, guns kill - less guns, less death. And it is a point that should be made over and over again until something is done about it.

5  Investigative journalism at its finest
Funny -- the people who seem to think this movie was about gun control must not have even seen it. Making the point that Canada has as many guns as we do, Michael Moore concedes that they do not have the crime level that we do. The reason we do, he points out, is the focus this country has on power, dominance, and violence -- through our media, our methods of crime control, and our interactions with the world. None of it is effective, and all of it creates more harm than it heals. It is the American focus on the power of violence that is at the roots of our dilemma -- that, and a history of power and control and manipulation of our children that Moore is either not aware of or does not go into. That's okay. His body of work involves more investigative reporting than I have seen in my lifetime. It was the mainstream media that immediately began talking about gun control in the wake of Columbine, smacking of the Hegelian dialectic. No mass media outlet started talking about controlling their own violent imagery. Let me quickly state that Michael Moore is not advocating censorship -- for an investigative journalist, that would be foolish. What he is advocating is responsible journalism -- something that seems to have gone the way of the dinosaur -- until one considers Jon Stewart. Maybe they should get together and create their own news channel. It would be one place you could get the truth and be able to make informed decisions, instead of wanting to take a shower after each barrage of mass manipulation.
