If they started passing out prizes to kids' musicians who keep it simple, Laurie Berkner would have a closetful. Her pared-down acoustic songs, with their goofball lyrics and fizzy delivery, have won her a cult following of 2- to 6-year-olds in New York. She's also taken her live show shtick (involving stuffed-animal festooned hairdos) national, performing on the Today show and at the White House. For her first foray into video, she follows the same homespun strategy. Laurie Berkner's Video Songbook is little more than a concert framed in an onscreen storybook. It culls the fan favorites ("Victor Vito" and "We Are the Dinosaurs" among them, plus some new songs) and pairs them with simple animation and whiz-bang inter-song vignettes. For a low-budget flick, a lot is being offered here. Laugh-along interactive numbers and a playful vibe make this a songbook worthy of more than a few flip-throughs. --Tammy La Gorce

My toddler's lover her like Raffi!
We bought this at a Laurie Berkner concert becuase my daughter (then 2) loved the show. She and her brother (now 3 and 18 months) LOVE this video! I was just doing a search to see if there are more yet, but sadly not! It isn't the most professionally done video (seems pretty low-budget) but the kids don't seem to notice, in fact they LOVE the parts where the filming is done in an inset screen shaped like a drawn book and another character keeps trying to climb "into" the book where Laurie and another singer are performing to a group of kids, apparently at a birthday party. The songs are quite silly and imaginative, and my husband and I find ourselves singing along (and humming them after the video is done). I recommend seeing her in person if possible and definitely buying this video for young children!

Awesome Entertainment for Kids
Laurie Berkner's Video Songbook is a refreshing addition to the line-up of children's music videos available. I stumbled upon her work completely by accident as I bought tickets for a children's concert because it was on a day my husband could come. What a delightful surprise! When we came home, I immediately ordered all her recordings, which are now the undisputed favourites in my 2-year-old's collection.

Just to warn you, Laurie may just be the most groovy children's entertainer out there. Her music is hip and lively, her lyrics are interesting and intelligent, and she, herself, sparkles (and it's not all glitter). She is fabulous at connecting with children and this is evident on this video. My son also loves watching the kids in the audience as they dance and participate.

This video contains some of our favourite songs... and we eagerly anticpate a new CD recording of those songs not released elsewhere. This is not the most polished video production but that is part of the reason we think so highly of it (I'm not a fan of slick, fast programming for kids... and there are no previews!). I can 99.9% guarantee that your child will love this video and I can only imagine that you will, too.

very entertaining and fun
My 7 year old twin girls love this video and have already watched it several times since it arrived yesterday. I like the fact that it is basic with not alot of frills. Many of the songs are from tv and so they are familar and the girls already sing and dance along to them. They are also enjoying learning the other songs.
