Welcome to the Hudson Valley Sudbury School

The Hudson Valley Sudbury School is a new choice for education in the Hudson Valley. The school will open in September 2003. Enrollment will start in January 2003.

What makes the Hudson Valley Sudbury School unique is its core beliefs and philosophy.

The School's Philosophy

The Hudson Valley Sudbury School is based on the Sudbury Valley School in Framingham, MA. The Sudbury Valley School was started in 1968 on the principle that people learn best when they are self motivated. Our school's core principles are:

• All learning is self-initiated. There is no mandated curriculum.
• The school is governed by the students and the staff.
• The staff serve as role models for effective adult behavior and carry out the philosophy of the school.
• Tuition is kept affordable so that the school is within reach of the widest range of families.

Underlying these core beliefs and philosophy is one basic tenet: trust.

• We trust that children want to learn. In fact, we trust that children are driven by a basic need to learn and to explore.
• We trust that children are able to make sound decisions that affect their lives and the lives of other children and adults in their community.
• We trust that children, given a choice, will choose the best and most appropriate path for their education.

The Sudbury Valley School experience has shown what is possible when a school is run from trust instead of fear. Children learn to trust themselves and they learn that they are responsible for their own lives and their own decisions. They learn responsibility. Most importantly they learn how to be successful adults.
