From Amazon.com Product Description
Apple's long awaited new operating system brings more than 200 new features to Mac users. Technically speaking, Tiger boasts an open source core, 64-bit system, and support for the High Definition H.264 video codec. But, every user will enjoy the highlights of this new release: a new search tool, cool new mini applications, real-time RSS feeds in the browser, improved email, amped up audio and visual conferencing, parental controls, automation of tedious, repetitive tasks, and the list goes on.
OS-Level Search: Spotlight
Handled by Tiger's search technology, Spotlight, users may search across documents, images, movies, music, PDFs, email, calendar events, and system preferences with one keyword. Spotlight reviews text content, filenames, and keywords (metadata) applied by users and automatically stored by files to return search results. Results are fast and smart, providing previews of returned files and the ability to filter them by kind, date, people, and location.

Drop and Drag Tool Panels: Dashboard

5Nothing Compares To Apple, May 6, 2023
Running a G4 1.3 PowerBook, 512MB ram

This is an amazing OS, yeah, its alot like panther with alot of quirks, updates and cleaner. The Dashboard is one of my favorites, nice easy access to calculator, weather, address book and a whole lot more with only hitting one key on and off. Next would be the updated slideshow and image features, wow, what a cool update. Automator looks impressive, soon as you learn how to do workflows, it gets easier. Runs Adobe Photoshop and illistrator with no issues. Safari seems to be faster, no issues so far, mail, address book seem to add a few more features and some design updates.

Being a Windows user most of my PC life, I decided to try a Apple ibook last year, since then I purchased a Mac Mini, PowerBook and an iPod. Apple has proven how stable, powerful and user friendly a computer can really be. My Dell PC and HP Laptop occassionally had mini-issues with freezing, more pop-ups and just always needed to restored to get it running just right, I never have done that with my mac, just keeps running, I can use Macs MS Office, works great between both Mac and PC versons. I still use Windows based machines but its no Mac. OK, thats more than I was going to write, but I am a true new Mac fan, if they keep the trend they have today, I will be one for a long time.

OS X Panther was Great, OS X Tiger is Amazing, Recommend it if your Mac will take it.

2Tiger 10.4 Problems, May 6, 2023
I have been using Macintosh since 1988.
Tiger 10.4 is not recommended.
I installed the product.
Most of the features work. Most.
Safari 2.0 did not work on my computer. I am not alone in this. I checked with Macfixit and other websites.
Before you install Tiger, back up your old OS. Recommended.
Safari 2.0. In case Safari 2.0 does not work do this.
1. Make a back up copy of Safari 1.2.4
2. Rename the product Safari 124 as indicated in Macfixit.
3. After installation of Tiger, check out Safari first.
4. If Safari 2.0 does not work, take the copy of Safari 124 and install on the dock.
5. That will work.
6. Notify Apple that Safari 2.0 crashed on your computer.
From what I have read Safari 2.0 does not crash on every computer.
Possibly the product needs an upgrade, or a bug fix.
All the other features in Tiger worked.
Office 2004 for Macintosh also worked, including Entourage the mail service.
However if you are not using Entourage, test the Apple Mail feature as well to determine that the filters are working.
Another problem I found out, the HELP feature did not work on my computer.
It comes up blank. However it just came on, after 3 hours. Very strange.
Recommended after installing read Custom Install in case you have to reinstall a product.
Hopefully Apple will come out with fixes for the product so that it works on everyone's computer.

5Microsoft Falls Farther Behind, May 5, 2023
I've had this now for three days and it's great. I've only begun to plum the depths of all the new features. But spotlight is fantastic, anything on your hard drive is at your finger tips, and it's very fast.
In fact the whole operating system seems to run faster since I upgraded.
I use the pdf function in the printfunction to save web pages from the web without printing them. And I would sometimes then email those save files to friends. Well, now when you click on the print command your offered a list of things you can do with your pdf file, including emailing, faxing, or saving to iphoto and many others.
Dashboard is going to be a winner to. I always liked the widgets that were available with Confabulator. But, you couldn't access them, and put them away as easily as this. And if you check with Version Checker lots of new widgets are being added everyday.
This new OS doesn't change the look of your computer, but it's rich with enhancements.
Don't hesitate to upgrade. And your still using OS 9 nows the time to finally step into the 21st century of computing.

5A great improvement but...., May 5, 2023
I love the improvements to OS X but I do have a few issues.

First is that I had to go back and dig up my old OS X.3 disks to reinstall Classic. This is no big deal but I thought it was odd that this was not included. (I did a clean install)

Also, and this is a big gripe, I lost Quicktime Pro. I had the old version of Quicktime Pro and when Quicktime 7 was installed I lost the editing abilities I had already paid for and there is no discount on buying Quicktime 7 Pro. This is really a pain. Especially because the full program is actually included you just need the code to activate the Pro features. My old code will not work I tried.

I took me a while to go back and install the software I had on the old OS X but it's was worth it. If you are planning on doing a clean install be sure to download Backup from Apple and copy all your photos, music, etc. to a CD or DVD (of course you do this regularly anyway right).

My favorite features are the Dashboard and Searchlight. I use my computer for research a lot and the ability to search inside the .pdf files on my computer is a great feature. Dashboard is just cool.

The RSS feature on Safari is great also. I set up the RSS feed screen saver so now instead of just looking at pretty pictures I can scan the latest info on the sites I view regularly without even touching the computer.

The tighter integration between iCal Address Book and Mail is also useful. I did have a 3rd party app to put all the birthdays in my Address Book into my iCal but now this is built in and built in is alwats better than add-on.

Wishes? I wish that Searchlight could find text in Word and Pages documents. I have to work with Word .doc a lot to deal with PC users and this would be helpful. A quick word about Pages. It is a great word prossesser. The ability to export my work as either a Word document or a .pdf is outstanding. I bought MS Office before Pages was available and now it seems a waste of money. I find Pages easier to use and rarely use the featuers of MS Office such as Powerpoint (especially now that I have Keynote) or Excel.

So there you have it. Is this upgrade a must have. No, I guess not. But it is awfully useful. If I had to chose one over the other I would buy iWork first, but I am very glad I have both.

5Love it, May 5, 2023
Just upgraded from 10.3.9 today, and I'm *very* impressed. Spotlight is amazing. Dashboard is very cool and useful...it only takes a little while to get used to the "magical" floating layer of widgets. My iMac G4 seems to run faster than before, too.

Notes:

(1) Don't be alarmed about temporary sluggishness immediately after installing Tiger: Spotlight is indexing your hard drive - a one-time event. When the Spotlight icon stops "pulsing" you'll know it is done.

(2) I bought the Family Pack & have one non-DVD-capable Mac. To install the Tiger on this older Mac, I'll need to use the Firewire target disk mode workaround - search Apple support forums for details... Apple's media exchange program costs $10 and forces a choice between having a DVD *or* CDs even for Family Pack customers...which doesn't meet my needs.
