Amazon.com Review
In many ways, creating a sequel to Half-Life is an unenviable task. After all, the goal is to craft not just any ordinary game, but an improvement to a title that is widely considered to be the high water mark for first person shooters. Fortunately, Valve does not disappoint on their sophomore effort.

Half-Life 2 picks up exactly where its predecessor leaves off, with gamers stepping once more into Gordon Freeman's HVAC suit as he awakes at some indeterminate time in the future, now apparently in the employ of the mysterious G-Man. Humanity has been sold out to alien forces, and your job is to escape their thrall and lead the resistance to victory.

HL2's key successes are in a few critical areas, the first of which is the new physics & graphics engine, called Source. People and objects fall, fly, tip over, float, and break in an extraordinarily realistic fashion, and in-game puzzles often require you to use simple applications of physics to progress. Second, an elaborate facial structure system coupled with excellent voice acting make for some of the most believably human NPCs in gaming history. This is no small thing; you will find yourself actually caring about the characters who surround you, even those that are normally regarded as cannon fodder. Third, the level design exhibits a subtle brilliance, which frequently fools you into feeling like you're making your way through an organic environment and not a forced linear path. These elements combine to form one of the most truly immersive experiences ever captured on a PC.

This gaming bliss comes at a cost, however. If your computer isn't running the latest and greatest hardware, you may find yourself turning down a lot of the slick graphics to keep the machine from choking. Also, at the time of this writing the only two bundled multiplayer games are a barely updated version of Counter-Strike and HL2 DeathMatch. Counter-Strike: Source is every bit as fun as the original, but the DeathMatch is lackluster and contains only a handful of uninspired maps.

Overall, Half-Life 2 is a smashing success, every bit worthy of the prestige and respect that the franchise has been awarded. This is absolutely a game that every computer gaming enthusiast is going to want to have in their collection. -- Jon "Safety Monkey" Grover

Pros:

  • Advanced graphics and physics system provide highly immersive experience
  • Believable, expressive non-player characters
  • Fun, realistic level design
Cons:
  • Requires a very fast computer to play with all bells & whistles on
  • DeathMatch mode has few maps and is not terribly entertaining

This game could easily take the cake as greatest one-player fps of all time: An almost epic story to rival with some of the best rpgs out there, not to mention great graphics and great gameplay devices (the gravity gun and physics engine were simply awesome) are weaved together so tightly that not one incredible aspect sticks out above the rest. HL2 shows you the future of gaming without messing with the fun element, accomplishing what I think every game should set out to do. The environments are colorful and anything but repetitive, ranging from abandoned cities gripped in urban warfare to alien-infested beaches and a terrifying ghost town that adds an almost survival-horror feel. Unfortunately, after exploring nearly every possible scenario that these devices could take the game just sort of ends after a kind of disappointing final boss (if you would even call it that). Still, it really leaves things open for HL3, which will almost certainly be gargantuan.

first of all. ignore the so called kids review....lil kids shouldnt be playin this (note: cus he puked he probly glued his face lieterly 1 inch from screen...geez thatll make me puke) . This game in single player is awsome. I havnt gotten my cd version yet but when i played over steam it was great single play and multiplay, same with CS:S. graphics are amazing and beats down halo2's graphics for the xbox with a stick. if you liked the first game or not ull love this. Be warned: i advise getting this cd version cus sometimes if u have steam version they might screw up ur comp and steam version wont be compatiable after that....did for me... so get cd's

The person who wrote that "review" should be taken out back and beaten with a hose.. twice. The depth, and technology in Half Life 2 can not even begin to compare to Halo 2. Not only does the story keep you guessing through the entire game and after, but it also keeps you on the edge of your seat with it's Awesome physics technology that has been in development for about 6 years. Note: it makes a little more sence if you've played the original, which is also a fantastic game, which is regared as one of the greatest first person shooters of all time. Again, DO NOT compare this game with Halo 2. No explanation on why, just don't compare them.

4It's a good game once yuou get started., Apr 29, 2023
Half life 2 has to have one of the best sound effects and grahics i've seen for a computer game. and i've played a lot of games like this. I know a lot of people sit their and complain about the downloading and stuff and than threaten the valve network by saying that they hope more hackers hack into the system. but originally the reason why they had to do that was because of hackers. so would you really want more hackers to hack into the system so you can't play great games like that? i knomw it can get frusturating but you'll get it after the fourth try or so so don't give up because it's a game worth playing! I know also a lot of people complain about the graphics and sound effeects and that it looks so choppy. well just like the other half life games you have to set your computer to the picture effects and etc..just like any other computer game. it doesn't do it for you. i know it's a pain in the ass to go in their and do it but say la ve you know? live with it. now i don't know much about my computer so i can't list everything my computer has. but i do recommend in getting a lot of ram when yhou buy this game. acctually it's essential and i don't know why they don't put it up their along with the other items to buy. and you do need a fast computer to be able to see the graphics a lot clear. we see the graphics pretty good on mine and it plays descent enough to still be a good game. i've never seen a game with such good graphics like that it's incredible. it's like watching a not so cheesy good plot sci-fi movie like aliens or something. all in all i do recommend this game for any lover of the series and as i have said in rescent past reviews that you must look at the requirements for your computer before you get this game and make sure you hasve lots of ram because you'll be upgraded this game a lot.

I STRONGLY suggest not getting this game. The gameplay makes you dizzy and after ten minuites I Literaly THREW UP, not because its gross but because it makes me so dizzy. If you want a good FPS then I strongly suggest Halo 2.
