Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
The compact optical system of the Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L USM makes it a lightweight telephoto zoom lens. Its inner focusing ring and USM focus drive give it high speed, yet silent, autofocusing capabilities. The fluorite and super UD elements in the lens construction give you high image quality across all its focal lengths, and the nonrotating front lens makes it easy to use polarizing filters.

Product Description
High-performance, L-series telephoto zoom lens combining light weight and compactness with an f/4 maximum aperture. Inner focusing and the ring USM enable quick and quiet autofocusing. Also, a circular polarizing filter can be attached and used without difficulty because the front lens element does not rotate during focusing. The tripod collar (sold separately) is the same one used with the EF 300mm f/4L USM.

5It comes with a shade and pouch., May 13, 2023
To be clear. This lens comes with a shade and pouch. Also, the lens is light enough that you do not need a tripod collar. My first lens did not have a functioning auto-focus, but Amazon shipped me a functioning lens by 2 day air before I could even take the defective lens down to UPS! I was able to print out a shipping label, slap it on the old box and take it to UPS no charge. No charge on the 2 day shipping for the new lens. So, I am a happy customer.

5holy kickawesome, Apr 27, 2023
I will not say anything that hasn't been said before, but not enough good can be said about this lens. I use it on my Canon 300D (digital rebel) and frankly find it to be a great range. Very sharp, focuses fast (at least as fast as the camera will allow) and constant aperature is nice. One downside: very long, and heavier than the lenses I've owned before. The weight is a good thing, but the length makes balancing it difficult. I'll probably need to get the battery grip for the camera. Some have complained about the aperature of 4 to be insufficient on cloudy days. I haven't found that to be a limit. Setting the ISO to 400 seems to be enough to gain enough shutter speed for shooting larger birds and action. However, maybe it doesn't get as cloudy here in Minnesota as elsewhere? Doubtful. This is not a great lens for shotting stages though, unless a beefy flash is brought along. The lighting there is usually just too dim, even at ISO 1600. Even on a tripod, if there's movement on the stage, you won't be able to stop it.

If you want the tripod collar, get it. It's not necessary though, even on cheaper tripods (mine is 30 years old, and it was cheap then).

But mostly, as others have said, the biggest problem is that it introduces you to "L" lenses. This is a steal for the quality you get, but they definitely get more expensive, and buying anything less will be a noticeable step down for you. Don't let that inhibit you though. This is a primo quality lens at a spectacular price.

5Oh my god!!!, Mar 8, 2023
I have used cameras for the past 10 years. Both digital and 35mm. I have used more lenses than one can count to, well sort've :) I have developed my own photos in professional labs and so on. Okay, enough about me, here's my review:

I bought a Canon EOS 20D DSL camera and bought this lense to capture some close up action. All I can say is, "Oh My God!" This lense and that camera are the best thing god, I mean Canon, has ever put on this earth. I have never seen such BEAUTIFUL and CRISP photos. I thought I was a very average photographer with all of my photos looking like I shot with a $7.00 disposable. Until I bought this lense! The photos you see in Sports Illustrated magazine or Victorias Secret or whatever, this lense has that quality factor and then some.

As for the other specs, here goes nothin'... I bought this lense thinking that it would be michael jackson white. Well it is actually a white/beige color. Almost a tan white. It is not the white color you see on printer paper. It is more like the white color of your old lady's undies. Know what i'm saying? Anyway, the weight of this lense is fairly light and comfortable for anyone capable of carrying a briefcase (for exmaple) all day. But the image quality will truly bring out the professional in you.

This camera has some great features. I have shot photos of my kitty indoors and under very low light. The lense picks her up with and without flash. You don't need a tripod as I have done all my shots by hand. The lense comes with a hood and a case which is cool too.

I highly reccomend this lense and I also reccomend the purchase of a "UV FILTER". A U.V. filter will protect your delicate L series lense in case of accidents. Check this out... The first 2 hours after I opened my package and installed my lense, I took it back apart and put it in its case. I set the lense in my closet and within seconds my stupid cat jumped to grab the tightening string. Well, my lense fell off the shelf (in my closet) and thank god I had the U.V. lense. It hit my wood floor but nothing broke. Needless to say my kitty got a butt kickin'. Just spend the extra $20, it's worth it to protect a $500 investment.

And remember, if you don't like this lense whatsoever... You need to see a shrink to check your head.. But other than that, you can sell this thing on the internet for nearly what you paid for it. Canon lenses do not lose value like cars. Mainly because Canon produces quality. And this my friends, is the definition of a Quality Product! Kudos to Canon!

5JUST BUY IT, YOU'LL LOVE IT!!, Jan 30, 2023
I agonized reading all of the reviews, Canon 70-300 IS, Sigma, Canon L. I finally went down to a local camera shop and took pictures with the various lenses. I took the pictures home, and WOW - the L line really is worth the $. The focus of this lense is incredible, and the pictures are bright and vivid. Only this lense was able to focus on a close up shot of a brown fabric. Seeing the threads was unbelievable.

5Big, but sharp, Jan 12, 2023
I was at the local camera shop when I saw this lens being put in the "used" case. I asked to see it and noticed the L designation, so I checked it out on my 10D. I immediately noticed the sharpness of the photos and speed with which it focused, and traded in my less-than-stellar Canon 28-135 and $200 to snap up this lens. I especially like the fact that the lens is fully enclosed and rugged, for those times when I shoot out in the desert. I've been using this lens for about six months now, mainly for naturally lit portraits.

It is a big, heavy lens, so don't think you'll be too discrete when shooting with it.
