A bit dry, and narrowly focused, Jan 30, 2023 First, I should say I've just started playing Texas Hold'Em about a month ago. I'm a raw beginner.
I have to admit I had trouble with this book. The early and late parts were great, but the meat of the book is a turn by turn examination of various kinds of hands. There's probably a ton of wisdom in these pages, but I kindof kept zoning out reading through it. Each chapter ends with a kind of quiz describing real examples of hands and asking you whether you should fold, call, or raise, and then provides an answer and an explanation. This is probably great stuff for a more advanced student of the game, but I'm still not familiar enough with the jargon to be able to visualize what's going on. When I read:
"You hold the Ks Jd in middle position. An early player calls, you make a weak call, and the cutoff raises. The small blind calls and four players see the flop of Jc Js Th. The early player bets. There is $200 in the pot. What do you do?"
it takes me a long while just to figure out what's going on, let alone formulate a reasonable answer. A visual representation of the hands would've added a lot of value to the book and may have gone some ways towards justifying the $30 list price.
I'm not knocking the book, though. I just think its not for rank beginners like me. I did pick up some good tips about bankroll management and things like that, and some vague direction on actual play, but I feel I'd need to become more learned in the terminology to really get full value out of a book like this.
I may come back to it in the future and reread it, though another slight failing is that it covers only 10-hand Limit Texas Hold'em and I'm finding I prefer the "Sit and Go" No Limit games. Nothing on the cover of this book indicates it doesn't touch Pot Limit or No Limit games or short-handed games.

Good book for begining internet Hold'em players, Dec 22, 2022 This is the first poker book I purchased. It made me a winning online player. This is a basic starting book.
Explains the importance of pre-flop hand selection and recommended starting hands.
Explains why some cards work well with more players in the pot. Explains what hands work well with one or two players in the pot.
Go over post flop play. How to play draws, slow playing, check raising, ect
Explains importance of position. Why you need to play more tightly in early position. Why you can be looser in late position.
These are all important in getting a basic understanding of how to play Hold'em.
I am no longer using just Hilgars strategy to play poker. I can say this gave me a good starting point on becoming a good poker player.

Great book for beginner to low-intermeidate., Dec 3, 2022 [...]you can't go wrong with this book based on content for the beginner to low intermediate! Some of the details here basic, but if you're new to the online game -- regardless of how much experience you have in live play -- this book is worth reading even if it seems to touch only on the basics. The concepts of taking notes on other players and game selection is a very unique concept to the online game.

Great book, Nov 29, 2022 This Book was cool. It provided important and useful concepts about the game of Poker. I learned some new strategies, which identified some leaks in my game. Leaks in your game can come from anywhere!!! Leaks can originate from lack of aggression, overcalling raises, misreading opponents and any other number of ways.
Ive been playing for about 5 years now and love the game. Ive read many poker books and found this one to be very good. So I would suggest you buy this book and maybe a couple others and get to playing. There's really no excuse anymore - since anyone can access the internet. Try party poker. Use bonus code "25TOPLAY" for a quick easy free $25.

Fine Organization but Overpriced. , Oct 31, 2023 Internet Texas Hold 'Em is one of the more meticulously put together books I've ever seen. It is strong in organization and focus. It gives chapter outlines, summaries, and test questions galore and the author indisputedly knows what he's talking about. You may recognize his name from this year's WSOP Championship where he had his Aces snapped by Al Krux on ESPN. Overall, this offering is educational even if rather dry and mechanical.
I recommend this guide as I definitely learned some things, but I will say that you may be wise to buy something else first as the price is rather prohibitive. [...]
