 Don't waste your money, Apr 26, 2023
I'll have to admit, when it comes to PC games I am still a rookie. That is why I thought purchasing Prima's Offical Strategy Guide to this game would have at the very least provided me with the basics of the game, such as how to set off a claymore once it is placed, how after calling in artillery, to actually have them fire off a round of two, how to make any one of the varieties of helicopters hover so that I could strafe the enemy (before inevitably crashing it into a hillside or tree, but obviously that is user error and not a bug in the program), etc. Like I said, I am a PC game rookie.Having purchased many of Prima's guides for Nintendo products, I would expected a pretty good guide to the game. Wrong. Make that really wrong. Like a previous reviewer states, hot tips like "assault rifles are well-suited to this type of combat", "if you run out of ammunition with your assault rifle, you can use your pistol" and "although not useful in a firefight, your knife can be used to silently take out the enemy who is manning artillery" (I am paraphrasing, but I am guessing you get the point). That being said, you may want to save your money. In all fairness, I can't speak on the multi-player tips, something I won't attempt until I can master the simple act of using a claymore, something this book did nothing to help me with. I will have to continue to learn through trial and error, as again this Strategy Guide seems pretty worthless.

This guide was pretty disappointing. I bought it hoping that I could find out precisely what the difference between the Evolution and Conquest game types were, but I couldn't find any mention of that. (To be fair, it was barely mentioned in the manual, either.)Of course, writing a strategy guide for a primarily multiplayer game is difficult. Too much of it changes from server to server and from game to game to make any kind of coherent strategy viable. But still, a lot of the material here seems to be just filler. I mean, I hope I'm not giving out any spoilers here, but in the tester tips section, watch out for blinding brilliance! Here's one tip, in full: "Assault rifles and machine guns are the bread and butter of Vietnam." Encountering this kind of compressed einsteinean thought renders me basically mute. I'm stunned by the notion that people can actually be this smart! To be fair, I'm engaging in hyperbole to make a point: the brilliance of BF: V and BF: 1942 is that they're simple enough to be immediately accessible. They don't really require guides, which I realized after I spent 15 bucks on this thing. BF: Vietnam is a brilliant game, but there's nothing in this guide that you're not going to figure out after playing the game for a little while.
