 Life of Pi, May 6, 2023
Pi Patel is a boy who was born and raised in India during the fifties. His father is a zookeeper of small zoo which abound with all kinds of animals. Pi finds himself yearning for all knowledge and despite being Hindu by birth, he also considers himself a student of Catholism and the Islamic faiths.
At sixteen, Pi and his family find their way to Canada on a Japanese freighter, to start a new life for themselves as well as homes for many of the former zoo creatures. A sudden explosion throws Pi and three lifeboat mates on a journey that would last seven months on the open seas. The mates include a tiger, zebra and hyena, or are they?
LIFE OF PI, is a story of finding hope when there is only despair, and finding God through the trials of life. The story contains many parallels and mysteries that you will find yourself pondering for months after you have finished the last page.
LIFE OF PI is the second novel written by Yann Martel. The story's beginning dragged a bit, but hanging on for the adventure that follows the tragedy at sea is definitely worth it. His descriptions and story telling abilities will keep you reading through to the end.
For a second novel, Martel has captured the art of a good read.
LIFE OF PI is a perfect book for any adult reader group.

Unconquerable Spirit, May 5, 2023
"Life of Pi" is a great book with similarities to "My Fractured Life", "Secret Life of Bees" and "The Alchemist." There is a hope to the spirit of Pi no matter what seemingly unconquerable challenges life throws at him. Even getting stuck at sea with nothing for company but a boatload of animals including deadly predators, Pi still minds a way to find hope.

Very entertaining and thought provoking, May 5, 2023
I LOVED this book. Yan has a complete command of the English language and has the talent of explaining the simplest experiences in words that translate very well into feelings. Every once in a while I go back and read some of the paragraphs that I have bookmarked like the paragraphs that describe Pi's fears and explain fear in general. This is a book that also makes you think, well after you have finished the book and at the end shouldn't that be what we expect of every book?

Early on in Life of Pi this book reads very slow and is a boring book that is very tempting to just put down, but if you can read past the 100 page mark you will find a truly inspiring book about survival on the open seas. I think that Yann Martel did a great job putting just the right amount of fiction and seemingly non- fiction into this book. While some parts are unbelievable some could happen at any time and this balance makes this book a winner.
The book starts out in India where Pi's dad owns a zoo that supports the family. During his time in India Pi becomes very religious and ends up worshipping to three religions at the same time, much to the disappointment of the various religious leaders that he was involved. Then because of various situations that arise the family decides to move to Canada along with many of the animals which they have grown so very fond of. When their boat sinks and Pi finds out that he is the only survivor. He must fight with loosing his entire family, and much to his horror his little life boat is full of animals, many of which are very dangerous and as the story progresses kill each other off until Pi is left with just Richard Parker a full grown male Bengal tiger. As they travel the open seas for more than 200 days they have to rely on each other to survive.
This book while started out slow defiantly picks up after the first 100 or so pages and then be prepared to read it through in one sitting because it gets very gripping. This is a great book for beginner and advanced readers alike, being just the right length and flowing nicely. I would recommend this book to the whole family although very young readers should stay away because of some graphic scenes but other than that this book is for everyone.

Pleasant, unique, adventurous read., May 2, 2023
Well, some parts weren't so pleasant (that whole being stuck on a boat with a tiger thing)! I've never read anything like it before, so it was very refreshing as fiction goes. Afraid it didn't make me believe in God, though, despite the hopes of the Indian gentleman mentioned in the first few chapters... :) I read the book within a leisurely couple of days, and it was enjoyable from start to finish. The pace of the book certainly changes once the ship goes down. I don't want to include any spoilers, so suffice it to say that this is a smooth, easy read with lots of adventure. Definitely recommended.
