This video is the sequel to the beloved children's book and video Anne of Green Gables. It continues the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong young orphan in 1890s Canada, whose hot temper matches her red hair. Anne of Green Gables told of Anne's adoption by an elderly brother and sister, Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst) and Matthew Cuthbert, and her childhood adventures in the idyllic village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Anne of Avonlea takes up the story soon after Matthew's death, when Anne has graduated from college. It follows her struggles and adventures as an aspiring writer and English teacher in a private school on the mainland. Girls seven and older, as well as adults, will enjoy this intelligent and beautifully made film, first shown on PBS. It's filled with themes parents can discuss with their daughters--including self-reliance, generosity, and perseverance. It also gives a realistic portrayal of the situation for women during this historical period, through characters that are multifaceted and human. Anne's struggle to find her voice as a writer, to handle difficult people maturely, to stay optimistic despite setbacks, and to nurture her students are both thought provoking and entertaining. Girls will also enjoy Anne's romantic travails, as she tries to decide between two suitors: her childhood friend Gilbert, and a rich, handsome, and mysterious widower. The film is beautifully filmed, and the costumes and settings portray an idyllic time and place. The cast is excellent. Megan Follows as the spirited Anne and Dewhurst as the gruff but tender Marilla give especially fine performances. --Elisabeth Keating

5Equally as charming as the first one, Aug 10, 2023
"Anne of Avonlea" is a brilliant companion to the original "Anne of Green Gables." This sequel combines the next THREE novels in the series --- "Anne of Avonlea," "Anne of the Island," and "Anne of Windy Poplars." Several characters are combined to make ONE specific character, but the story still remains very much Anne's story.

Now a little older, having taught at the public school in Avonlea for a while, Anne decides to try her hand at teaching at a private school in Kingsport --- a wealthy town mainly run by a particular set, the Pringles. It's a new and daunting experience --- especially considering that she can't seem to win over the students or the school board --- but her stubbornnes won't allow her to give up, and she charges forward with her usual determination.

There are several new characters, but we still have appearances by the old ones. We meet Morgan Harris, his intelligent daughter Emmeline, his mother and his sister, and of course we meet countless girls who go to Kingsport Ladies College. But Rachel Lynde and Marilla Cuthbert are still around, Diana Barry remains a wonderful friend, and of course there is the wonderful Gilbert Blythe --- more in love with Anne than ever.

This is one of the best sequels I have ever seen, it fits perfectly with the original movie and does a decent job of remaining as faithful as possible to the books, in spite of everything that was altered. I love this movie. To this day, my family occasionally has "Anne Weekends," in which we watch "Anne of Green Gables" one night and "Anne of Avonlea" the next!

A wonderful sequel to the first movie. It continues the story and again captures the charm and warmth of the books.

2Not for Montgomery fans, May 30, 2023
For fans of the Montgomery Anne series "The Sequel" can be very disapponting. I have read (and loved) the Anne series and I found the movie sequel disappointing because the characters such as Davy and Dora I had grown to love were absent from the movie.

I do like the movie, but I think if you have read the series and adored it you can't help but be disappointed by the numerous changes. The events in the movie are extremely different to the chronological sequence Montgomery intended them in. I adored the movie "Anne of Green Gables" which had changed slightly from the book but the movies following seem to lose the Montgomery style. For fans of Montgomery I would not recommend the movie; however for those just getting into Anne the movies would be a nice place to start.

5Megan Follows and her guest stars are captivating!, Apr 22, 2023
While sequels rarely live up to the first film, this one does! Still as captivating and compelling as the first, it keeps you rivited to your seat wanting more! Incredible sequence of events have you laughing and crying and wishing you live on Prince Edward Island! Don't miss this series!

Here is what I wrote about the first.

Okay okay, so you say this is a chick flick! This is definitely one my girlfriends and I will put on during a weekend where we ditch the guys....but....the guys ALWAYS want to join us in this!

Let me tell you a story. I have been watching this movie since I was a kid. I LOVE this movie and its sequels. It's an incredible time piece that brings joy and laughter to the room and fills it with enchantment.

Despite the fact that I have watched this series oh, let's say...100 times, I still love to watch it. One day, after a long day, I put the DVD in and began to watch it. My brother-in-law and his co-worker were sitting at the dinning table having their "manly" talk time and they started to who haw me saying things like, "oh there she goes, watching that chick flick again!" They continued to goad me. My brother-in-laws friend would come down during the week to do his shift at work (living quite far away) and go back home on the weekends to his wife.

It was Monday and he had been up since 1 AM and it was 9 PM and he was ready for some shut eye. As I began to watch the movie and laughter filled the room, I noticed as they slowly worked their way around the table, switching seats until eventually one was sitting on the couch and the other on the end cap of the couch. Eventually the co-worker was on the floor. The DVD did not finish until 11:30 PM and the co-worker asked me where the other DVD follow-up was. He HAD to know what happened. I told him I had lent it out. Exhausted, but undaunted, he asked me to phone the person I lent it too and get it for the next night for him to watch.
Chick flick? NO WAY! Men love this as well. Anne is a character that everyone can relate to and laugh with. Get it! It's the best!
