Editorial Review
Although the first Barbie--created 40 years ago--wasn't a woman of color, Mattel has since broadened its perspective of what the American girl wants--and looks like--by including dolls of varying ethnic backgrounds. It even commissioned this limited edition African American 40th Anniversary Barbie for collectors of all ages. She has a lot to celebrate! Barbie has inspired not only cultural diversity, but poems, songs, hairstyles, fashion, plastic surgery techniques... It's futile to deny her. You'll find that Barbie is an inextricable part of American pop consciousness that penetrates all of our lives.

40th Anniversary Barbie wears a sparkling black-and-white striped gown reminiscent of the bathing suit she debuted in 40 years ago. The gown has sheer gathers at the shoulders and an explosion of fabric designed as a fishtail hem that defies gravity. But what makes Barbie so popular with collectors is her ability to accessorize down to the tiniest detail. In this instance, she wears "diamond" drop earrings, sheer black pantyhose, black pumps, an extravagant diamond choker, and a diamond tiara placed in dramatically upswept hair. Our anniversary girl holds a bouquet of 40 pink roses and a tiny anniversary card. She steps into the present--with a wink at the past--with the inclusion of the "doll's doll." That is, 40th Anniversary Barbie comes with her own scaled-down premier doll, dressed in the same '50s bathing suit and packaged in a box that mimics the original. It all comes with a two-year manufacturer's warranty and display stand. Enjoy. --Diane Beall

1Cute. But not worth it!, Dec 31, 2022
I have one of these dolls. They may be cute but what do you do with them if your a kid?! Well thats the problem. People have to add things to this doll! It needs more things!Like more dresses! or more shoes! I`m saying you need to add things for the kids!

I was very pleased with the 40th Anniversy Barbie (African-American). She was very sophisticated in style. My daughter will be very pleased.

I was glad to see the African American doll being offered. Her beauty is impeccable. However I would have preferred a copy of the first African American doll offered instead of the first Caucasian doll. Better still ... I would like to see an anniversary African American doll.

This doll is beautiful. When I saw her I knew I had to buy her right away. Her dress is so elegant with those wonderful red roses. Although I will not be taking her out of the box, I think she is one of the best barbies I have bought so far. I would recommend this barbie to anyone and at this price it is a great deal.

5Such a beautiful doll - I can't believe she is in stock, Aug 9, 2023
This is the 40th Anniversary Barbie that matches the 40th Anniversary Ken that recently debuted. They would be lovely displayed together - if you can find the AA 40th Anniversary Ken anywhere. He seems to be sold out all over. This is a collectible dolls at a great price - buy it now.
