It would seem that 14-year-old Mia Thermopolis ("five foot nine inches tall, with no visible breasts, feet the size of snowshoes") has the kind of life every Manhattan teenager could only dream of: She is, in her spare time, the princess of the European country of Genovia. Alas, the Royal Privilege is more like a Predicament. Not only does she have to endure daily princess lessons from her critical Grandmère ("It isn't as if I'm going to show up at the castle and start hurling olives at the ladies-in-waiting"), but her new stepfather is also her algebra teacher, her mother is pregnant and vomiting, she doesn't like her boyfriend very much, and she's convinced the real love of her life--her best friend's older brother--thinks of her as a kid. Fourteen-year-old Mia Thermopolis is in her freshman year at Albert Einstein High in New York City. She is like any teen at that awkward stage in life, except for one thing; she is also a princess and heir to the throne of the small European nation of Genovia. Although in only a few months she must travel to Genovia and make her first appearance in front of its citizens, she has other, more pressing, concerns; namely, how to dump her boyfriend Kenny and make her best friend's brother Michael notice her. She has had a crush on him for years but fears that he will only ever see her as "his little sister's best friend." Written in journal form, Mia alternately discusses her "princess lessons", her disappointment with Kenny, and her unrequited love for Michael.
My main issue with this book is Mia and her irritating and sometimes ungrateful attitude. She has a life that most teen girls dream of; great parents, a studio apartment in New York City, a boyfriend who adores her, and she is a princess on top of everything. Yet she spends the majority of the book complaining about her life and how pathetic her situation is. Part of me felt sympathy for her because who can't remember how miserable that age could be? And plus she has the added burden of being royalty. However, with her position comes certain advantages. She has so many resources at her disposal and she constantly expresses her concern about environmental issues, etc. So, instead of wallowing in self-pity for the entirety of the book, I would have liked to see her take some action. Now before you think that I'm just going to keep on criticizing the book, I do have some good things to say. I think the story was really saved by Mia's sense of humor. Her journals are written in a such a funny and self-deprecating way that it really helps the rather bland storyline. For example, when Mia gets angry and crushes a cheerleader's cell phone beneath her "size ten combat boot" and gets suspended for it, she writes, "I am turning into Courtney Love." And as for the ending, there are no surprises there. Because don't pricesses always live "happily ever after?"

Once again, Mia's life is O-V-E-R. What now, you ask? Oh, she has a boyfriend. Yes, that is her big huge problem. Well, the problem is that she doesn't like her boyfriend. She LOVES Michael Moscovitz, however. Will her anonomous love letters work? This book has a cliched plot and is not very well written anyway. I thought that the narrator was really whining about her ridiculously petty problems and should just be thankful for the fact that she has a good life. Then again, this book is sure to make anyone with some REAL problems feel much better about themselves.

Princess in Love is definately the best book yet! Now that Mia has a boyfriend, her love letter writer Kenny, you'd think she'd be happy. Wrong! She is still deep in the throes of her crush on Michael. Not that he notices. He's too busy with Judith, his new "friend" ,and only manages to look up in time to see Mia gouge a hole out of her tongue in an ice skating incident. Mia finally decides to take action: she'll send Michael love letters! Meanwhile, Christmas is coming: so are midterms! Will Mia manage to pass them all, especially Algebra? Will she be able to break up with Kenny, and will Michael return her love? This book is excellent, and very funny! Princess in Love is the best book in the series.

If you have read the first two Princess Diaries Books, by Meg Cabot, you will surely love the third in the series: Princess in Love. It is an awesome book that will make you laugh, cry, and definitely make you read the rest of the series. Mia Thermopolis, the unique protagonist, has recently learned that she is the sole heir to the Genovian throne, has a new boyfriend whom she secretly cannot stand, and is in love with her best friends' brother. Things are not going all too well to put it, and to add to Mia's trouble, she is flunking Algebra, in which her new stepfather (and the father of her mother's baby) is the teacher. Through the trials and errors of Mia's decisions, she learns that she's got to call it quits with Kenny and give up her hopes of ever getting asked to the Nondenominational Winter Dance. Being in love with your best friends' brother and having a boyfriend at the same time is not easy. Through putting it off continually, and with shameless luck, Mia soon is free from Kenny and has a new love in her life, to her surprise. This is a fabulous girl-world crack up book that will keep readers turning pages to find out what ridiculous thing Mia will do next. If you loved the first two books, this one is definitely for you! It's got the happiest ending you could find, and is hilarious! I would definitely give it five stars!

Mia Thermopolis is fourteen-year-olds, five foot nine, and has no signs of a visible chest. She is the Princess of Genovia and is getting ready to be introduced to the populist of Genovia. Her mom recently married her Algebra teacher Mr. Gianini. Her mother is into her third month of pregnancy, and deadly sick all the time. Everyday she has princess lessons that are taught by her Grandmere. She really does not like her boyfriend, Kenny and does not know what to do with him. Instead she is in love with her best friends (Lilly) older brother Michael Moscovitz. The problem is that she is afraid that he doesn't like and he only thinks of her as his little sister's best friend. Mia does not have a date to the nondenominational dance, because Kenny hasn't asked her yet. She would really like to go with Michael, but she's afraid he doesn't feel the same way about her. So, the big question is.... Who will Mia Thermopolis go to the winter nondenominational dance with (Kenny/ Michael/ or no body)?
