Parental Controls

Set computer profiles for children using the aptly named Parental Controls and limit their access to system controls, documents, printers, burners, applications, email, chat, and the Web. With multiple profiles, parents can set varying levels of access for each child. Even downloaded or emailed applications are subject to parental approval first.

Drop and Drag Tool Panels: Dashboard Pull in mini applications from a menu, named the Dashboard, to complete frequent tasks, like tracking flights and stocks or looking up words in the dictionary. Add and rearrange these panels, called "widgets," on your desktop as you choose, and hide or show them with the click of a button. DVD to buy a CD!!, May 16, 2023
Upgrade to Mac / Tiger and you have to buy the DVD to do so. But, if you only have a CD - R or CD - RW, then you have the 'privilege' of spending even more dosh to get a CD version from Apple.

Is it just me or is this not quite right eh!!

Perhaps when I have eventually installed the CD version, I shall be rating this higher.

Everything seems to be slower (powerbook with 1ghz processor, 1gb memory). Fairly frequent system hangs, printer no longer functions

You get the idea. Wait for version 1. Apple should have.

The cultural era of the Gutenberg Effect has ended, it is over. Books are of no consequence. College classrooms are of no consequence. You or anyone can easily run the same numbers to see what these exponential effects can have in the hands of a typical nine-year old kid, who already has more computing power at their fingertips than that which sent man to the Moon and back. "The next generation of graphical User Interface is already here, it is called Video-gaming." While this cultural shift would appear abrupt from a historical perspective, it may SEEM slow in an individual's real-life personal experience.

The Digital Lifestyle introduction of Spotlight's live navigating through the cosmos of Knowledge is in part derived from Apple's applying the new language of Metadata Tags to their earlier graphical HotSauce efforts in the '90s, which was then deferred, waiting for the technology and market to catch up. Few words about performance (+/-), May 15, 2023
Anyone using Panther or especially Jaguar, should go for this great update.
There is slight gain in performance. The system seems to be more responsive. Anyone looking to run a lot of those widgets, be just aware that 512 MB is really the MINIMUM if you want to run everything smoothly.
Spotlight technology, which works with most of the appllications is really FAST! I am highly recommending it to anyone. It's nice that Apple finally (since Jaguar) is releasing each next OS, which works great without upgrading hardware.

Good, but getting bloated, May 15, 2023
I've mostly been using Mac OS 10.2 for the past two and a half years, so upgrading to Tiger added quite a few improvements, but compared to Panther, the additions to Tiger are somewhat minimal in comparison to the other OS X updates. Panther feels like the sweet spot between being functional and powerful, while matching Mac OS 9 on developed features (and then some!). However, Tiger is feeling somewhat bloated in its features, in the attempt to improve Mac OS X.

The biggest problems I had were these:
1) My external hard drive which contained my data kept turning off so the data migration didn't work, and locked up the machine.
2) Due to a long computer name, my DLink 524 Router wouldn't work with Tiger, hence no internet. Hopefully this will be resolved with 10.4.1.

It has taken me a week to finally get things back up to speed, but now that they are, things are smooth sailing.

My favorite additions to Tiger are Grapher, Spotlight searching, and the parental controls (such as in Safari 2). Considering that I used 10.2 for so long, it is also nice to be able to not be limited to what software I can use since quite a few applications ended up requiring (at least) Panther.

Another big advantage of Tiger is the increased speed. Despite the continual additions, Mac OS X has become faster with each increment. 10.1 definitely felt faster than 10.0, 10.2 was a little snappier, but Tiger has some noticeable speed improvements, especially when starting up and logging in. I would say at least 15 seconds have been shaved off of the start-up process, which is a great bonus. However, it is highly recommended to have at least 512 MB of RAM to keep things running smoothly, especially with the OS, various apps, and Dashboard all running at the same time.

In the end, is this a critical upgrade? At this early stage, I would say no. Of all of the Mac OS X upgrades, I feel that this is the least critical upgrade since it mostly adds new features, which are nice, but not overly necessary. However, as more and more applications become dependent upon Tiger's built-in technologies, the need to upgrade will become more vital.
