Teens who loved Ann Brashares's The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2001) will cheer its equally riveting sequel The Second Summer of the Sisterhood. As in the first novel, four teen girls who have known each other since birth (their moms shared a pregnancy aerobics class) further forge their bond of friendship through a pair of thrift-store jeans that magically, impossibly, fits them all perfectly.

Like the summer before, Carmen, Bridget, Tibby, and Lena share their individual adventures with the Pants collective, creating an engaging, kaleidoscopic narrative of four voices. This summer, Tibby attends a film program in Virginia and Bridget (Bee), whose mother has died, impulsively jets off to Alabama to get reacquainted with her estranged grandmother. Lovely Lena tries to protect herself from the heartbreak of loving her long-distance Greek god boyfriend Kostos, and Carmen deals (poorly) with her mother dating again and having the nerve to borrow the Pants!

The Second Summer, while breezy and fun to read, deals seriously with love lost and found, death, and finding the courage to live honestly. The teens' lessons are often painful, but the Sisterhood prevails. Quotations from luminaries such as Charlie Brown ("Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love") to Nelson Mandela ("There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered") open each chapter and cleverly reflect the novel's many moods. (Ages 12 and older) --Karin Snelson

4A Don't Miss Book, Sep 28, 2023
The Second Summer of the Sisterhood is about four girls, Lena, Carmen, Tibby, and Bridget share the pants for a second summer. They call themselves the Septembers because they were all born in September. Tibby is going to college, Bridget is visiting her grandma, Carmen and Lena are staying home but still have problems of their own. The pants seem to be magic; by helping them stick together and solve their problems.
I liked the suspense and action in this book. I liked when Lena and Kostos were happy together, but not when they couldn't be together anymore. I liked how Brian stood up for what was right and I thought it was mean of Tibby to try to ignore him because she thought her friends wouldn't like him. Carmen was really mean to her mom and I didn't like when she did that. I thought it was pretty cool how Paul always knew what to say but didn't say anymore than that. I loved this book and didn't want to put it down.
There is a movie based on the first book, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, but I have not seen it yet.
I think that teenage girls, 12-16, would love this book because the main characters are teen girls and some of their problems relate to us.

4Second Summer of the Sisterhood, Sep 8, 2023
A year has past since the pants ceremoniously entered the girls lives. This year Tibby is the one leaving town, and the others have plans to stay home for the summer.

Tibby is going away to videography camp at a college nearby where she will learn not only about her talent as an artist, but she truly begins to grow into herself. Carmen is faced with first dates, both hers and her mothers. Being the apple of her mothers eye for so long, Carmen isnt sure what to think of having to share her mom. Lena, is lovestruck and lovetorn with Kostos. Difficult decisions and broken hearts abound. Unexpected plans send Bridget away where she is faced with her family's past and her own loss of self during the past year.

A wonderful book, The Second Summer of the Sisterhood is as good, if not better than the first. I feel like I know these girls so well and share in their triumphs and their downfalls. We see them grow with each book. Such honesty and reality from the author is to be comended. A superb job, Ms. Brashares.

4Love This, Aug 31, 2023
This is a very well written novel for teen girls that is very in tune to what teens are actually like, not just the wishy washy nonsense about teen girls. A true winner and a great novel for any girl, young or old.
