Designed to accompany a standard LEGO Mindstorms kit (version 1.5 or 2.0), this 316-piece set offers an array of pneumatics, special gears, motors, and other elements. Seven advanced projects are detailed on the accompanying CD-ROM, along with tips and tricks from LEGO masters. A 9-volt gear motor is also included. For the uninitiated, Mindstorms offers the chance to build and mobilize robots using a Windows 98- or Windows ME-compatible computer, special software, and an infrared tower. Good for the engineering mind, made for people witha fascination with robots and tinkering, and a certain laziness to inspire invention, not so good around children, quite fragile.

Lego Mindstorms is a phenomenal toy. Your kids -- and probably you! -- will learn programming, logic, math, etc., while have hours and hours of fun. I cannot say enough about how impressed I am with Mindstorms! This Ultimate Builders Set expands the Robotics Invention System. NOTE: THIS PRODUCT REQUIRES THE ROBOTICS INVENTION SYSTEM (RIS) 1.5 OR 2 TO OPERATE. The RIS contains the programmable brick that controls everything. This kit adds more gadgets that the brick can control. FOR YOUNG USERS This product will immediately engage young users in building and programming the layouts that come with the kit. This alone makes it worth twice the cost. The programming environment is easy, yet the possibilities it offers will draw your kids into thinking and problem-solving. There are "First Lego Leagues" all over the country in which young kids get in groups and compete on robot designs. Learning and having fun at the same time: What a great idea! FOR ADULTS Lego robots are used in graduate courses at MIT and Indiana University, among other schools. The programming environment is robust enough that it can support exercises in artificial intelligence. Check the NET: there are people out there posting advanced code for the Lego OS, writing new operating systems for the Mindstorms platform, and posting instructions for their own robotic creations. It is fun and educational for adults, too! PURCHASING RECOMMENDATION Get the Robotics Invention System first (of course). Play with it for awhile. See if your kids like it. See if they actually will make new things with the parts in this kit before spending your money on it. But if they're interested, get the kit. It's a good addition.

There was no information on this product on the website regarding required systems. We purchased this set and then found that we needed the Robotics Invention System. Please make specs available prior to purchase.

Great Expansion Set - Not Good For Stand-Alone Use, Aug 9, 2023
I like the idea of pnumatics but you are limited to one motor if you dont have another one.
The scout also limits you because of only two input/output ports, so its just that, an expansion set for the ris.

Awesome Mindstorms Add-ON!, Mar 15, 2023
This is an awesome add-on for Lego Mindstorms Robotic Invention System, any version (i.e. 2.0). Features many rare parts that only come from it, and even a pnuematics system! The pnuematics can really broaden your ideas, and introduces completely NEW ideas that you never thought possible, or never even thought of! If you've made a ton of inventions, and don't know what to do next, try this.
PARENTS: It's also a very educational product in the way of mechanics, and can make some of your child's dreams come true!
