Following the flop of Little Nicky, Adam Sandler returned to safe territory in Mr. Deeds... and made Nicky look inspired by comparison. A loose remake of Frank Capra's 1936 classic Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, this dumbed-down version finds Sandler in the Gary Cooper role, inheriting a vast fortune and a corporate empire, foiling a greedy executive (Peter Gallagher), and winning the heart of an undercover reporter (Winona Ryder) who's been mocking his small-town naiveté in print while falling for his goodhearted sincerity. It's fun enough to satisfy Sandler's loyal fans--and John Turturro's a hoot as Deeds's foot-fetishist butler--but the subtleties of Capra are lost on Sandler, director Steven Brill, and writer Tim Herlihy. While Gary Cooper portrayed a rube who was savvy about big-city cynicism, Sandler's an amiable goofball with a heart of gold and an empty skull. You can admire him, and parts of the movie (including Steve Buscemi's unbilled cameo), but you have to work harder to get there. --Jeff Shannon

2Not an Adam Fan, Sep 20, 2023
I am just not a fan of Sandler. I've liked a few of his movies enough to be open minded about seeing a new one when they come out, but this is not one I will watch again. Boring and void of anything interesting I couldn't care less what what goes on in this movie. I cannot recommend this movie at all.

5O, dear!, Sep 4, 2023
This is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.
I've watched it many times.
This is not just a film, this is a VERY DEEP STORY. There are plenty of issues to be admired: honesty, naivety, hold to the word, romance, childish perspective (all the time and especially at the end when Deeds pledges for the 6 grades virgins in every investor), generosity, care for others, wide-heart („Well, you do make difference in the world every day. You are a school nurse...") ,etc., etc., etc.
And the actors fit perfectly for their parts: Sandler, Turturro, Galaher...
Hey, I don't have to read any ethical nor theological book as soon as I can watch this movie.

"Hard to breathe, feels like floating.
So full of love my heart`s exploding.
Mouth is dry, hands are shaking.
My heart is yours for the taking.
Acting weird, not myself.
Dancing around like the Keebler elf.
Finally time for this poor schlub...
to know how it feels to fall in lub."

3Wasted effort for valiant Winona, Jul 19, 2023
Did Adam Sandler take advantage of Winona Ryder's shoplifting trial? Insiders say he was able to get her for cheap, cheap, cheap, for after a series of flops she was persona non grata in Hollywood and this was to be her "comeback" in an A picture. And then came the shoplifting arrest and by the time the movie came out nervous executives couldn't decide how to play Ryder's appearance in the film. TV commercials aired that managed to obscure the fact that she was in it, or left her out altogether, providing viewers with a shock when they actually arrived in the theater and the credits came on. People were scratching their heads saying, "Hey, I didn't know Winona Ryder was in this!"

She's actually good in the movie, even though she has one of those lousy parts that are all about going undercover and then falling for your pigeon, and then he finds out who you really are just when you've discovered you love him. Hackneyed and formulaic, but you can see Winona trying to do something with the role and actually making you (sort of) believe that a hardened reporter could find love.

Oh well, forty billion dollars would leave anyone vulnerable. But to make a long story short, due to the way the studio tried to hide that she was in the movie, MDGTT failed as a comeback vehicle for Winona, and she is still searching the byways and highways of Hollywood looking for a box office hit that will onve again catapult her to the star salaries, the pick of roles, and the diva gymnastics with which she once held sway over Young Hollywood. Scripts once came to her door in truckloads! Let it happen again for a deserving little actress whose talented outshines many who are full-sized.

4Good fun (3 and 1/2 stars), Jun 29, 2023
Adam Sandler movies always seem to be rather dumb and weird but always pack in a bunch of laughs. This one's no exception. But, in this one, I thought that John Mackenroe, and John Turturro delivered the most laughs but Sandler was at his best again. He completel dissmantles a group of people that bug his girlfriend and pays a LOT of money for some teenagers' bikes.
Anyway the movie's about Longfellow Deeds, an average Joe living in a small town where he is loved by everyone. He has one very weird friend that has very strange eyes and eats oreo pizzas. Anyway, then one day, Deeds inherits 40 billion dollars from a relative. He then moves to New York but is harassed by the press. He's not used to this life and has an awesome butler played with perfection by John Turturro.
The movie delivers good laughs and is a very solid movie. It frustrates me to give it 3 stars because aazon doesn't let you give 3 and 1/2 stars so I'm just going to give it 4. It makes a good rent that delivers a good amount of laughs.
